ART AS JOURNEY

ART IS A JOURNEY

Just as colors transition with the seasons, between hot summers and cool, grey, misty winters, my paintings reflect the “journeys” of my life.

Developing as an artist is a life-long journey.

The journey of mastering color, pigments, composition, materials and techniques. Times of growth are followed by seasons of frustration. Like having climbed half way up a mountain, when I look up I see how far I have to go…when I look down I realise how far I’ve come.

Each individual painting is a journey.

Each painting begins with an idea of the destination and how it will be reached; but through diversions, delays and discoveries along the way it often “arrives” somewhere completely different. No matter how carefully I plan a painting, it’s impossible to know where the journey will take me.

Art can take me on “real” journeys.

There is no greater joy than to travel and paint in places I have never experienced before. To set off in the morning with my sketchbook and paints and experience the magic of places where, around every corner, lies something new and unexpected.

And, like all the other journeys, it’s the unplanned that make for the best adventures!

Art is a form of love.

Art is the ultimate gift.

Art heals life.

LIFE. ART. TRAVEL.

SOLD: MURIWAI BEACH, WINTER

The west coast of New Zealand is famous for grey sand beaches and, in winter, rough, stormy weather. The waves and rip tides can make it a dangerous place to swim, but walking along the empty miles of beach at this time of year is a celebration of seagulls, wind, dark clouds and white surf.

We need beauty in our lives…

We're hard-wired for it, and this need has been
with us since the earliest human groupings.

Creating art allows us to express our deepest feelings
and ideas without having to put a name to them.
