ART AS JOURNEY
Just as colors transition with the seasons, between hot summers and cool, grey, misty winters, my paintings reflect the “journeys” of my life.
Art is a journey. Developing as an artist is a life-long journey of mastering color, pigments, composition, materials and techniques. Times of growth are followed by seasons of frustration as the more I learn, the more I realise how much more there is still to learn!
Each individual painting is a journey. It begins with an idea of the destination and how it will be reached; but through diversions, delays and discoveries along the way it often “arrives” somewhere completely different. No matter how carefully I plan a painting, it’s impossible to know where the journey will take me.
For me there is no greater joy than to go on “real” journeys…to travel and paint in places I have never experienced before. To take my sketchbook and paints and experience the magic of places where, around every corner, lies something new and unexpected.
And, like all the other journeys, it’s the unplanned that make for the best adventures!
Art is a form of love. Art is the ultimate gift. Art heals life. (Robert Genn)
LIFE. ART. TRAVEL.

MURIWAI BEACH, WINTER
The west coast of New Zealand is famous for grey sand beaches and, in winter, rough, stormy weather. The waves and rip tides can make it a dangerous place to swim, but walking along the empty miles of beach at this time of year is a celebration of seagulls, wind, dark clouds and white surf.
